YCRG YCRG Isn’t a Step, It’s a Leap in the Right Direction

The more observant Tory scolds among you will already have seen my friend Mr. Markham’s post on this website (http://gossiptory.com/2012/07/3712/) and I think it’s high time there was more representation of libertarian views in the conservative movement. William F. Buckley once said ‘a conservative is a fellow standing athwart history yelling, “stop!”’. With meagre economic growth, a half-in/half-out attitude to any real cuts, and a quagmire of sleaze through which the government has been wading lately, it is now more exigent than ever to shout “stop!”

People think we libertarians are terribly radical, but we’re not. People call us ‘progressive’ conservatives, but if anything we’re regressive. We can chart the state as it has swollen, taxes as they have risen, the economy as it has guttered and it now threatens to peg out completely. We are still told by the state what we can and cannot put into our bodies, and the things we are still allowed to consume are covered with propaganda. You must not drink more than x. Smoking will make you y. We are coddled and cosseted by the state and even food cannot be served up without a side helping of guilt. We live in an age of prohibitions.

The plain packaging for cigarettes movement is gathering speed. What next – plain bottles of wine and cans of lager? People scoff, but it’s far less ridiculous than a pasty tax! And all of this under a Conservative-majority government! Something has to be done, and it is we libertarians that have been shouting the answer to the government for years: Stop nannying us, stop doing everything for us, and stop charging us for the damned privilege!

If you also want to join in yelling “stop!” then you can ‘like’ the Young Conservative Reform Group’s facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/youngconservativereformgroup) for updates on the launch party and the launch of the website.
