Surrey Tories Select PCC Candidate

Last Wednesday Surrey Conservatives selected their candidate for the forthcoming Police & Crime Commissioner elections, after the second of two members’ meetings. Julie Iles will be the Tory candidate in Surrey in November.

Earlier last week Mole Valley, Epsom & Ewell Conservative Future broke the story that former MP for Woking, Humfrey Malins, had withdrawn from the PCC selection process. I can now reveal that this was due to ‘personal reasons’. The word on the political grapevine though is that he faced some very tough (and potentially embarrassing) questions about expenses at the first members’ meeting in Oxted.

The turnout at the hustings event was quite disappointing. Not only were there not as many people I had hoped for but there were very few young members, which is a great shame as this is a key piece of Conservative policy.

Personally I would like to congratulate Julie on her selection and I’m sure all of us in Surrey will help as much as we can with her campaign over the coming months. Commiserations to Howard Jones, who gave some very good answers during the Q&A.

Below is Julie’s statement outlining her suitability for the PCC role:
