Losers Can’t Be Winners
I read that Nick Clegg has confirmed that if the 2015 General Election produces a second hung parliament he is quite happy to join a new Government with the Labour party. Now I have no problem with the Liberal Democrats leaving the Conservatives, my preferred outcome of the 2015 election is a majority Conservative Government and I will be spending the next 3 years campaigning with that as my end goal. But I cannot predict the result; anything could happen between now and then.
I write this in response to Clegg as it would be undemocratic for the Liberal Democrats to remain in Government. If another hung parliament comes then the largest party must Govern either alone as a minority and have another election, like should have happened two years ago or form a coalition with the nationalists (if they have enough seats to bridge the gap). If the Conservatives remain the largest party this still applies to them, but we can be sure the Liberals will lose seats and the Liberals cannot therefore remain as the key makers. We cannot have a system whereby the party with the biggest swing against it remains in Government. Nick Clegg referred to forming a coalition with Labour as his “duty” if the Conservatives lose power but it will be his moral and democratic duty to return the Liberal Democrats to opposition. Although if any Liberal Democrat goes into a second coalition it will be the end of the party!
We all know how Labour have run back at full speed to the tax and spend policies of the past but I hate to imagine the levels of tax and spend if the Liberal Democrats form a coalition with Labour and especially if Vince Cable or Simon Hughes is the Deputy Prime Minister, although I can bare either of them as Deputy PM instead of Harriet Harman (it’s a close call).
If this goes through, if Labour and the Liberal Democrats form a coalition we cannot blame Labour, we can and should blame the ultra sell out Liberal Democrats and it would show something terrible with wrong with British Politics if the losers became winners!
